Fabric Selection: The Heart of Your Gown

Fabric choice is one of the most important decisions in the entire process.

How a fabric drapes, moves, and feels against your skin will shape the final design. During this stage, you’ll be guided through carefully selected fabrics that complement your vision, your body, and your wedding setting.

Choosing the right fabric early allows the design to flow naturally, ensuring the gown behaves exactly as it should when it’s brought to life.

Design, Structure & the Toile Stage: Perfecting the Foundation

Once your vision and fabrics are confirmed, the design stage begins, but before your gown is ever cut in its final fabrics, it must first be perfected through the toile stage.

A toile is a full version of your gown created in calico fabric. This stage allows the shape, style, and fit of your dress to be refined in detail before any precious fabrics are used. It is during the toile fittings that proportions are adjusted, structure is perfected, and comfort is carefully considered.

The toile stage can take one appointment or up to four or five fittings, depending on the complexity of the design and the adjustments required. This process continues until the fit and design feel completely right.

At Alexandra Mayleigh Designs, the gown is never made in its final fabric until the toile stage is fully complete and the bride is 100% happy. The toile becomes the exact pattern that is then re-cut into the chosen fabrics, making this stage one of the most important parts of the entire bespoke journey.
